1 David departed from there and escaped to the cave of Adullam; and when his brothers and all his father's house heard it, they went down there to him.
2 And every one who was in distress, and every one who was in debt, and every one who was discontented, gathered to him; and he became captain over them. And there were with him about four hundred men. 1 Samuel 22: 1-2 RSV
David’s love for God made him a great man, but what made him a great leader? Could it be that his leadership success had a lot to do with his “inner circle?”
David did not wait until he held a leadership position to begin building his inner circle. Even though some of his earliest followers were misfits, David was able to transform those who came to him into a winning team. As time passed and David gained experience and grew in his leadership, he was able to attract stronger people. David was able to mold all those who came to him into great warriors and leaders.
David was an incredible leader and team builder, but in many ways he was an ordinary person – with flaws and failures. David gave thanks to God for his abilities and his “inner circle.” David made his inner circle great, and his inner circle made him great.
Perhaps we are like those that were attracted to David. We understand the mission and are determined to help. Our new leader (Fr. Brian) is determined to create a strong and vibrant team that will accept the responsibilities to accomplish our stated mission: "A community of disciples enthusiastically leading all people to transformation in Jesus." The Rt. Rev. Russell E. Jacobus, Bishop
I am sure that you can see the obvious action required “--- and every one who was discontented, gathered to him; and he became captain over them.”
Joyous Blessings,
